Union Internationale des Architectes
Bund Deutscher Architekten BDA
UIA Berlin 2002 e.V.

Union Internationale des Architectes (UIA)
Founded in 1948, the International Union of Architects aims to unite architects from all nations throughout the world, regardless of nationality, race, religion, professional training or architectural school of thought. Member sections are professional organisations most representative of architects residing or practicing in the country.

In 1948, the UIA was founded by delegates from 27 countries boasting about 200,000 members. Today, it represents over 1.5 million architects through its 92 national sections. The UIA is thus one of the largest Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) which is accredited by the UN. The Bund Deutscher Architekten BDA (Association of German Architects) represents the national section of the Federal Republic of Germany.

UIA member sections are geographically divided into five regions:
Region I: Western Europe
Region II: Eastern Europe and Middle East
Region III: the Americas
Region IV: Asia and Australia
Region V: Africa

The UIA's most important aims and tasks are laid down in its Statutes:

-to improve human living conditions especially in developing countries
-to promote the development of education in the fields of architecture and town-planning
-to encourage the association of architects with other disciplines, professions and interests involved in building and planning

to represent the profession at an international level in relation to organisations and institutions such as UNESCO, UNIDO, WHO, WTO, in which the UIA is the only officially recognised association in its field; to represent professional interests in relation to other architectural organisations and architects at a national and international level; to associate with other non-governmental organisations in order to develop interdisciplinary contacts.

Bund Deutscher Architekten BDA
The Association of German Architects Bund Deutscher Architekten was founded in 1903 as a union of freelance architects in order to enforce the tasks and aims of architecture in view of the lack of quality in the built environment.

Since then, the BDA has been involved not only in questions regarding the contents of architecture, but also in professional topics. Thematic issues are dealt with mainly in its three standing work groups (Hospital Building and Healthcare Facilities; Town-planners within the BDA; Young Architects) and other groups. In cooperation with other national and international organisations (UIA, Architects' Council of Europe ACE), the BDA represents the interests of the profession and intensifies contacts with administrative and economic authorities.

The BDA aims to:

-promote quality in architecture
-improve the architects' professional training
-promote competitions
-encourage young architects and influence architectural education

-protect the independence of architects from purely commercial interests and develop the liberal profession
-extend the trusteeship and competence for client representatives for the welfare of society and the environment
-strengthen the architect's responsibility in relation to clients and society by a stronger media presence
-strengthen the solidarity committee among its members
-provide legal, fiscal and other consultancy

Today, the BDA's 16 regional offices represent more than 4,500 full members and about 500 associate members. Moreover, the federal association boasts 122 honorary members in Germany and abroad and 12 associate members working abroad. Special committees within the regional associations decide upon the appointment of exceptionally qualified architects.
